New Year's News Week 4

Reading Goals: Next Tuesday, January 31 is the last day for students to make their monthly reading goal (5 points) to receive this month's Book It Pizza Hut slip. The end of the 3rd quarter reading goals (9 points) is Friday, March 9. For your child to be on track with their quarterly goal, he should have 3.5 points by this Friday, January 27.

Valentine Boxes/Book Reports: By now you should have received a copy of the book report form both via email and from your child. All students should have their book for their report read and tested on by NEXT FRIDAY - February 3! Remember, this is a project to be done at home. If you need supplies, I am happy to share what we have if your child brings a list of the items needed.

Valentine Exchange: If your child chooses to send Valentine's to school for their classmates, please make sure your child sends one for everyone. Below is a list of names for filling out Valentines:

100th Day: Wednesday February 1, will be the 100th day of school. I have many fun things planned for the kids that day including eating 100 pancakes, doing 100 exercises, 100 piece puzzles, 100 cursive words, sharing a collection of 100 things and much more!!

Progress Reports: Progress reports will be ready to view NEXT Thursday, February 2. Please remember to check Skyward for these reports.

Fundraiser for Timothy: Yesterday, you should have received a yellow note with information about a fundraiser we are doing for a CDS students who has had brain surgery. Next week, the kids can dress up according to the theme for the day by paying $1.00 for each day or $3.00 for the week. Of course, any donation is much appreciated!!

Reading Goals for 3rd 9 Weeks: By Friday, January 27, students should have 3.5 points. The last day to test on books for this quarter is Friday, March 9. Students should also be working toward their 5 point goal for the month of January to earn their Book It pizza!! The last day to test for the January goal is Tuesday, January 31.

1o0th Day of School: The 100th Day of School (unless we have a snow day) will be on Monday, February 1. I will be sending home information on ways you can be involved in our activities that day!!

Valentine Box & Book Reports: Information will be brought home TOMORROW, Friday, January 20. I will be going over these directions in class and I will send an email copy to you! Encourage your child to choose and read the book they plan to use for their report early and not wait until the last minute. The box project will be completed at home!! Let me know if you need help getting supplies and I will be happy to let the students use supplies from our art cabinet.

Report Cards were available to view online using Skyward last week. If you have not looked at your child's grade card, please do so. Paper copies are only printed for those parents requesting them through the CDS office.

Friday, January 13 is Math and Science Day! This is always a great day for kids and volunteers. It is not too late to join us. Mrs. Zwemke will find a place for you!

Monday, January 16 No school in observation of the Martin Luther King holiday. Enjoy this day with your family!

Friday, January 20 Students will receive information about the Valentine Day Book Report/Box project. I will email all parents a copy of these forms as well.

Formative Blitz! We will be taking several short formatives in the upcoming week: Number Patterns, Telling Time, & Counting Money

Students should have 2.5 reading points by January 20. Let's all make our reading goal this 9 weeks!

Yearbook orders and book orders are also due on Friday, January 20.

Hoops for Heart donations will be due on Wednesday, January 25. Mr. Z will be sending home more information about this.

Thank you to everyone who sent donations for the Angel Tree. We were able to provide everything on our child's list including toys, a coat, socks, and games.

Thursday: Tomorrow is our Christmas Party! Hope to see lots of you here at 3:00. Thank you to everyone who has already sent contributions for the school supply goodie bags and who have volunteered to bring food and help with games. I am sure it is going to be a great party!

Volunteers Needed - I have a couple of volunteers for Christmas Craft Day tomorrow, but if you still would like to volunteer, we have a spot for you!! We will begin at 9:00. Hope to see you then!

Paper Towel/Toilet Paper Tubes: We still are in need of these items for one of our ornament projects. Please send with your child TOMORROW - December 2!

Angel Tree: Our class is responsible for an 8 year old girl who would like dress up items, books, and needs a coat (size 8), hat, and gloves. Right now we have about $50.00. We will accept donations through next week. You are welcome to send money, one of the above items, or a gift that you think she would like!

Book Exchange: I am sending in book orders TOMORROW, so if you would still like to order your book for the upcoming exchange, please send your order and money to school or complete your order online. Remember: Boys bring a wrapped book for a boy, Girls bring a wrapped book for a girl, $5.00 limit.

Gingerbread Building - Math & Social Studies all in one!
Both of my math classes will be participating in a gingerbread building project the week of December 12 - 16. We will be needing the following supplies. If you are able to donate something, please send it to school with your child by Friday, December 9, so I can plan accordingly.

Each class will need:
Canned frosting: 4 cans
Plastic knives (20)
Graham Crackers
M&Ms
Small Marshmallows
Life Savers/Gummi Savers
Small Candy Canes
Pull apart Twizzlers
Any candy that would be fun to decorate with!

The students will be planning their house, "buying" the supplies (to practice adding money), decorating their houses, and working within a budget. We will be taking pictures of their finished houses, and of course, eating the finished product! Items will be priced based on supply and demand. :)

Reading Goals:
The deadline is fast approaching for the 2nd nine weeks. All students should have 6 points by tomorrow, December 2. The deadline for this quarter is Friday, December 16. Likewise, the December deadline for Book It is December 16. Students only need to read 2 points this month to get their Book It pizza because we are only here 2 weeks!

November News: Week 3

Wow! There is a lot coming up in 3rd grade over the next few weeks. Read below to make sure you don't miss something!

Today: Progress reports are available online TODAY. Please take a moment to check your child's grades. If you have a question, please do not hesitate to ask. Remember, your child can and SHOULD correct papers that are marked "N" or that say "Please Correct". This will help your child perform well on quizzes and tests.

Tomorrow: Thank you to everyone who has sent their items for our cornucopia snacks. If possible, please send your contribution tomorrow, Friday, November 18 so that I can plan accordingly for Monday!

Next Week: Since it is a short week and Thanksgiving Vacation, students will once again have the opportunity to earn an "oops" slip for flashcards. No flashcards will be due for next week, but students who do them will receive a coupon good for one free week of flashcards!

Students will also be getting a Thanksgiving Math Review packet. I will hand these out tomorrow, Friday, November 18. They will be due on Wednesday, November 30.

Reading Goals: Students should have 4.5 reading points by the end of this week. Students should be ready to test and have 5 points by the time they return from Thanksgiving Vacation to be on track for their goal. The last day to read and test for this quarter is Friday, December 16.

Students have until Wednesday, November 30 to read 5 points for this month's Book It coupons.

We already have 3 students who have made their 2nd 9 weeks goal. Congratulations to Kyler, Gwyn, & Rhett!!

Speaking of reading... Please come to our PAWS reading night on Monday, November 28 from 6 - 7:30 in the CDS Library. This will be a great time for families to read together. There will also be a small snack and a craft project.

Tuesday, November 22: This is going to be a big day for us! Our class earned their first marble reward for good behavior. The class voted for an electronics day and pizza snack. We also were the top class in the food drive (see picture above!), so we have earned a popcorn party during the school wide movie, An American Tail.

So, on Tuesday, your child, with your permission, can bring an electronic device. For students who forget or who are unable to bring one from home, we have laptops that will be available. They also might want to be sure to have their water bottle to wash down their yummy treats!

3rd Grade Book Exchange: The 3rd grade classes will be doing a book exchange the week before Christmas vacation. Each child is asked to bring a wrapped, age appropriate book, $5.00 or less to school. These books can be purchased through the book order that was sent home this week (due Friday, December 2) or from somewhere else. Boys bring a book for a boy and girls bring a book for a girl. Please let me know if this is a hardship and a book will be provided. We do not want anyone left out of our exchange for financial reasons.

Mrs. Scott's Annual Christmas Craft Day!! On Friday, December 2, we will be participating in a fun filled day of arts and crafts that can be used as decorations and/or given as gifts this holiday season. In order to make this day a success, I could use parent volunteers. The more the merrier!! Our sessions will last from 9:00 - 10:25; 2:45 - 3:45. If you can join us for either time or both, we'd love to have you!! We are having to work around the Big Bash, specials, and Reading/Spelling test! Please let me know if and when you are available.

I am looking for cardboard paper towel and toilet paper tubes for one of our projects. Please send them to school with your child if you have some!

November News Week 2

Reading Goals: Students should be at 3.5 points today. If your child is behind, I STRONGLY SUGGEST reading over the weekend.

Cornucopia Snacks: Your child will be bringing home a note tonight about our Thanksgiving snack that we will be preparing. I have highlighted an item that I would like for your child to bring. If for some reason, you cannot send an item, please let me know.

Marble Reward! The kids have earned all of their marbles for good behavior. Having a sub this week really boosted their marble total! Please watch for information coming home soon about what the reward will be. The kids all made suggestions and after getting the list approved from Mrs. Smith, we will vote on what we want the reward to be!

The 3rd grade music program was a wonderful success. Thank you all for bringing your kids, providing the appropriate clothing, and being in the stands to watch them perform.

Your child should be at 2.5 reading points by the end of this week to be on track with their reading goal. Point updates should have been taped or stapled in your child's agenda on Tuesday. If your child is reading a longer book, I would be happy to help your child mark their book to make it into some manageable chunks for optimal success.

We are currently working on addition with regrouping. This is topic 3. We have talked about using expanded form to add and how to draw a model to help us solve these problems. We will also use the standard regrouping.
Remember to be working on time and money as it relates to your family (at the grocery store, out to eat, or with daily schedules at home). The more practice they get at this in real life, the better!
I have added many new websites to the website tab, including practice for number patterns, shape patterns, shapes, and addition and subtraction with regrouping.

Pumpkin Project is NEXT FRIDAY!!! If your child needs a pumpkin, please let me know so that I may get one for him/her.

According to our timeline, students should be sketching their idea for their pumpkin, gathering supplies from home if they want something outside of the normal craft supplies. I will have yarn, foam, construction paper, pipe cleaners, felt, & wiggly eyes.

Beginning Monday, your child can bring their pumpkin to school.

I have 3 volunteers and 2 maybes for helping on Friday. Thank you so much!!

Formative Retake if your child needs to retake their comparing and ordering formative, this will take place next week. Pezzola's class will use their Successmaker time on Monday & Tuesday, Scott's Class will use Computer Lab on Monday and any make ups on Wednesday & Thursday at Successmaker. Thank you to everyone who encouraged their child to practice and retake the test.

Don't forget to call the office and sign up for a time for Parent Teacher Conferences! Conferences are Wednesday, October 26 from 10:20 - 6:00 p.m. and Thursday, October 27 from 12:20 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. I look forward to talking to you about your child's progress. I welcome the students to come to conferences as well. I like for them to hear all the good things I have to say about them and let them be part of the problem solving process if we have issues we need to remedy. I won't be sharing anything with you that I wouldn't share with the kids.

Formative Retake

We recently took our first formative test (a practice test on a skill to prepare for the state assessment taken on the computer). Many kids struggled on this test, not because of a lack of academic skill, but for a couple of main reasons.

1. Students tried to complete their entire test in their head, without using the tools given to them.
2. Students rushed through the test.
3. Students did not read the test questions carefully.

We have reviewed this test together. Tonight, an opportunity for extra practice is coming home for those students who scored less than a 70% on the test. Your child needs to have the note signed by a parent, complete the review materials by Friday, October 14, and be ready to retake their formative the week of October 17.

Please stress to your child the importance of giving their best effort on these tests.

Some Concerns You May Be Having About Math

I know that there are some concerns about math papers and scores you may be seeing.

The good news is that our new series is aligned with the common core standards which were adopted by Kansas and the majority of the United States. These common core standards focus on deeper understanding of skills and call upon the students to share, explain, and refute answers verbally, in writing, and through models and drawings. I firmly believe that this move will make our children better problem solvers and critical thinkers in the long run, even though here at the start it may be bumpy!

That being said, the disadvantage that our 3rd graders have is that they are being asked to do things differently than they have in the past. It is no longer enough just to have an answer, but instead they may need to explain how they got their answer or why they solved the problem the way they did. This requires perserverence and endurance that many students are not prepared for, yet!

Please do not stress about homework scores you see on daily papers. These are opportunities to practice and get better with the majority of grade card grades coming from quizzes and tests. To best help your child, please encourage him to 1. COMPLETE all homework with their BEST EFFORT 2. Ask questions when they do not understand. 3. PARTICIPATE and PAY ATTENTION to in class activities.

Your child should have brought home this week a parent letter explaining how to access our math series online. Here you will find a digital copy of the text, extra practice, and under the "To Do" tab, activities for your child. It is my goal to adjust these activities to reflect what your child is currently working on. If you check your child's agenda on a nightly basis, you will find a topic and lesson number that correspond with the e-text. For example 2-4 is Topic 2 Lesson 4 and you could look at the examples and practice given for that lesson. Please take advantage of this resource!

Grades, Homework, & Corrections

As students are beginning to notice, the pace of 3rd grade can be a little fast and furious. Students will realize that making good use of class time is imperative and that if they do not use their class time wisely, they will have homework. If you find your child is having a good deal of homework (more than 30 - 45 minutes per night including reading, flashcards, and spelling words) please encourage your child to use the time given in class to work and not socialize.

Papers are available for your child to take home on a daily basis. If several days have gone by and your child does not bring his or her graded papers home, it might be a good idea to remind him or her to check the box of take home papers.

Graded papers will be marked + how many correct/how many possible. In addition, you will see an M for meets the standard (75% and above) or N for Needs Improvement (Below 75%). Corrections can and should be made on daily work that receives an N so that your child will be prepared for tests on that subject.

If you have questions on how papers are graded or scores given, please don't hesitate to ask.

In our read aloud book, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Fudge's parents in an effort to get him to eat, tell him he can either "eat it or wear it". When Fudge doesn't eat, his cereal ends up on his head!

I am offering a challenge to our class. If everyone in our class makes their 1st 9 weeks reading goal (5 points) then I will "wear it" - the kids will get to cover me in milk and cereal. If the whole class does not make it, I will get to "eat it" - my favorite cereal - Lucky Charms!

Pumpkin Project

As I was reading the Sunday paper, I noticed that Michael's has their craft pumpkins 40% off this week.

You are proabably thinking, "Why should I care about that?", but here is why!

Our class will be doing a pumpkin book report in October. The students will be asked to bring and decorate (at school) a pumpkin to represent a book character from one of the books they have read this 9 weeks and give a presentation about their book. Specific details, instructions, and a rubric for grading will come home later this month.

When we first started this project years ago, we used real pumpkins - sometimes this resulted in a stinky, slimy disaster. A couple of years ago, a wise parent asked about using the craft pumpkins, so we made this an option. Last year only a couple of parents brought real pumpkins. If you can bring a craft pumpkin, this is a great alternative because there is no rotting and you can put it out as a decoration for years to come. They always turn out super cute!!

I will keep you informed of craft pumpkins that I see on sale if you are interested in going this route. PLEASE DO NOT SEND REAL PUMPKINS UNTIL THE WEEK OF DECORATING IN OCTOBER!!!! If you see a good deal on them somewhere, let me know, and I will share with our families. If you are unable to send a pumpkin by the middle of October, please let me know, and one will be provided.

Book Clubs

Each child has been invited to participate in a book club with Mrs. Scott!! This is an optional activity, but one that will help them earn points toward their reading goals. Today, I gave your child a list of books that he or she may choose from to participate. Groups were formed based on reading levels, so ask your child which club they were invited to participate in. Students will read and test on their selected book by the following dates. Then, on the following day, students who have read and tested (with an 80% accuracy) on their book, will eat lunch with Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Rakes in the library to discuss what they read! Please encourage your child to participate. Books selected for this club may also be used for our upcoming pumpkin character book reports (details coming soon)!

Flashcard Practice Begins This Week!

Tonight your child should have brought home his first flashcard practice slip.
Every Monday, one of these should come home. This slip can be used all week.
As I explained to the kids, there is nothing magical about the slip I have given them. If for some reason the slip gets lost, wet, stolen, ripped, etc. never fear! Just write a note in your child's agenda, send me a note on a piece of paper, napkin, post it, or whatever. The objective here is that I have some tangible proof that your child practiced 20 minutes during the week!

Students need to practice their assigned flashcards (these came home Friday) using one of the games we practiced in class OR using one of the practice sites found on this blog. An adult needs to sign the practice slip when your child has practiced. Signed slips are due on Friday morning. For slips that are not signed, students will practice their facts at Friday's afternoon recess.

YIKES! The time is evaporating, schedules have not cooperated, and Mrs. Scott is officially STRESSED about this project!

We are going to a Plan B with our inventor biographies. Here is the scoop. Mrs. Heap is being super flexible so that we can have longer blocks of time in which to work on our reports and speeches instead of just a tiny 30 minute time.

Starting Monday, May 9, we will meet at the end of the day for an hour!! Next week we will finish typing our speeches, cut them into note cards, and practice and memorize our speeches.

Please have costumes and props here by Monday, May 16! During this week we will have a dress rehearsal in front of our classmates and then video tape each child's presentation.

Here is the PLAN B portion. Due to all of the end of the year activities, I am not going to schedule a final performance. Instead, I will video each child's presentation and send them home to you on a DVD.

I am not sure how the time got away from us so quickly! I am sorry for any inconvenience this change in plans may cause. The only other option is to keep your child in 3rd grade until June. :0)

Upcoming Events - May

Whew! It is going to be a busy month!!

This week is Humane Society week. We are collecting change that will go to the Humane Society. The grade level that collects the most money will win a movie and popcorn with Ms. Wood. The grade level that comes in 2nd will get an extra recess! Tomorrow, Friday, May 6 is the last day to bring in donations.

Next week (May 9 - 13) is the last week we will switch for reading and spelling. It will be the last week for reading the weekly story at home, spelling test, and signed flashcards slips. That way we can use the week of May 16 to tie up some loose ends on projects we have started!!

Tuesday, May 10 is PJs for Japan. For a $1.00 donation to Pajamas for Japan, your child can wear Pajamas on Tuesday, May 10. This organization provides warm pajamas for the kids in the devastated areas of Japan.

Friday, May 13 is the last day to make 4th Quarter Reading Goals!! In the morning, students will have an opportunity to take tests and read. However, in the afternoon we have Field Day, so there will not be time Friday afternoon for reading or testing.

Tuesday, May 17 is the Winn Dixie Reading Celebration. Students who have made their 4th quarter reading goal will watch the movie and eat puppy chow in the morning and in the afternoon everyone will get to participate in some dog themed activities!
Please be sure that you send your child's SIGNED permission slip (sent home yesterday) back by this day so that he or she can watch this PG rated movie.

Friday, May 20 is the beach party for all students who have turned in all of their library materials. We will be heading outside at 1:35 for snocones and water games. A yellow note came home yesterday with a list of do brings and don't brings!

I am pleased to report that our PRELIMINARY results look very good!! I am so proud of all the kids' effort. They gave it their all during the test - and our results showed it. NONE of our kids (in Mrs. Scott's math classes) scored below a 70% meaning TENTATIVELY we ALL MET THE STANDARD and we are on track to make STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE!!! Thank you to everyone who donated snacks, fruit, and juice to start our day off in a great way! Thank you to the parents who encouraged, reminded, and prodded their children to complete the review packets and to the ones who did extra practice with the kids in the areas they were struggling. Thank you for ensuring your kids were well rested and here during the testing days. Thank you for encouraging your children to do their best. We could not have done this well without everyone working together!

4th Quarter Reading Goals & Winn Dixie Celebration

Two Small Steps for Mrs. Scott, One Giant Leap for Mathkind!

Earlier this year, I wrote a grant through Donors Choose, a website that allows donors to provided needed items to classrooms. I was thrilled that within a few weeks my project was fully funded by supporters from around the state and U.S.! As part of this program, the Donors Choose website asks that teachers send thank you letters and pictures of the students using the new materials. My projects allowed our classroom to receive a dozen games that we have been using to review and prepare for the state assessment. In order to use pictures of the students, I must submit permission slips allowing their photos to be used. If you would allow me to do this, please sign and return the permission slip (coming home today!!!) by Monday, April 4. If you choose not to sign, that it fine. Their names will not be used by Donors Choose. Also, this week, I found out that I was selected as one of only 200 teachers from across the United States to attend the Phil Mickelson Exxon Mobile Teacher's Academy at the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey!! The Science Center is 2,000 feet from the Statue of Liberty and our hotel overlooks the Manhattan skyline!! I will get to go on this ALL EXPENSE PAID trip in July!

We will be taking our State Math Assessment on April 4, 5, & 6. Mrs. Duerksen's class will test from 9:15 - 10:15 and Scott's class will test from 2:30 - 3:30. Please make every effort to ensure that your child comes to school that day and is well rested. This will count as "math" time each day, so there will not be any math assignments or flashcards due for the week of April 4 - 8. A final review will be assigned tomorrow, Friday, April 1. We survived State Reading Testing and our preliminary results are good! If our scores hold true, we will have made Standard of Excellence in Reading for 2011!

Thank you to everyone who sent snacks, juice, and fruit. The kids really enjoyed this special treat.

Your child should be able to tell you his individual score as well as the category in which the score fell: Exemplary, Exceeds the Standard, Meets the Standard, Approaching the Standard, or Academic Warning.

Let's keep up the good work and do the same or better on Math Assessments!! We will test April 4 - 6. I will be sending home a review packet over Spring Break. This packet will earn your child's class extra recess following testing and more importantly review several key concepts needed for the assessment. Please encourage your child to do this assignment.

On Thursday, your child will be bringing home their new point goal for 4th quarter. Look for it in your child's agenda. The last day to test for the quarter will be Friday, May 13.

Your child has also been given the opportunity to participate in one final book club. Students selected the club that most interested them: Little House on the Prairie, Arthur Chapters, Hank the Cowdog, or Magic School Bus. Ask your child which book club he has chosen!

3rd Quarter Reading Celebration

We will be having our 3rd Quarter Reading Celebration: Beezus & Ramona on Friday, March 18. Students who made their 3rd quarter reading goal will watch the movie in the morning and everyone will celebrate with activities in the afternoon (painting, making door knockers, fortune tellers, and extra recess!). If your child has earned her reading shirt, please encourage her to wear it on Friday!!

Math: Measurement
We will be doing a lot of measuring in the coming weeks. Students need to be able to measure to the nearest inch, foot, yard, centimeter, and meter. We will be taking a measurement formative on Friday, March 18. We will also take our multiplication and division fact family test that day as well.

Spring Break: March 21 - 25: During Spring Break your child will have a math review packet for the state assessment (April 4 - 6). As an incentive for doing this packet, the kids have the opportunity to earn "extra recess" for their class. For every packet that is completed and handed in on Monday, March 28, the class will earn 1 minute of recess. So, the class has a chance to earn an extra 21 minutes of recess following assessments.

100th Day

We had a great time on the 100th Day of School! We didn't quite eat all 100 pancakes, but we did have a good time putting together 100 piece puzzles, grabbing 100 pennies, making 100 valentines, doing 100 exercises, and reading 100th day reader's theater plays!

I asked the kids to write what they would buy if they had 100 dollars. I wish my hundred dollars stretched as far as theirs did!! Just goes to show you that our kiddos really don't know the value of a dollar or 100 dollars. Next time you go shopping - show your kids what 100 dollars buys - maybe 2 pairs of tennis shoes (not a helicopter), groceries for a week (not a vacation to Hawaii)!

Multiplication

We have been really working hard on our multiplication facts. I hope your child has been bringing home their multiplication cards or practicing on one of the multiplication facts websites. Mastering multiplication and division facts is extremely important because so much of upper level math needs these skills as a base. For our state assessment, the kids need to know their 0-5s and 10s. We will learn the others after state assessments. The 3s and 4s tend to be the hardest for the kids. You can help with this - ask them to teach you how to "Rally Robin" by 3s or 4s. This is a great activity for the car, line at the grocery store, or when you are getting dinner ready. The more fluent they kids are with these facts, they better off they will be!

I have also been giving the kids key words for the facts:

3s are double and add another
4s are double double

Reading Assessment: March 14 - 16
Math Assessment: Tentatively: March 30 - April 1 Due to the snow days across the state, the state is opening the testing window, so we may move the math assessment back to April 4 - 6. I will let you know as soon as I know.

It is imperative that your child get a good night's sleep each night of the assessment. I will be giving you information at conferences of how you can best help your child prepare academically for the state assessment and support your child in any area in which he or she is still struggling.

In the past, my classroom parents have worked together to provide a light breakfast for the kids on these days. It gets the kids psyched up before the big test. If you would be interested in contributing to this cause, let me know. What we have done before is have something like a muffin, breakfast bar, granola bar, bagel, etc., a piece of fruit, and a juice box for each day.

Class Pictures:
Your child should have brought their class picture home yesterday. If you did not order one, I have 2 left for $8.00 each. Let me know if you would like one.

Individual Pictures:
Last week, your child brought home their individual "spring" pictures. If you plan on purchasing these, please return your money. If you do not want the pictures, simply return them. Or if you want some of them, return the appropriate amount of money and the unwanted pictures.

Spelling Bee: Friday, February 18 @ 2 p.m. in the gym.
Our class representatives are Emily and Cole, and our alternate is Brian. Good luck kids! Parents are welcome to come and watch, but please do not bring younger children since the contestants need absolute quiet.

Parent Teacher Conferences: February 23 & 24
If you haven't already, please contact the office to schedule a conference time. At conferences I will be giving out some VERY information about the State Math Assessment.
During conferences, you are welcome to visit the book fair as well.
Many teachers will post wish lists in the hallway for classroom supplies. The biggest need in our classroom right now is DRY ERASE MARKERS and CLOROX WIPES. If you can help with either of these items, it would be much appreciated.

Valentine Box Timeline

1. Read an A.R. book (Chapter book please!!!).
2. Test on the book. (You need at least a 70%, 80% would be better!)
3. Get your book choice approved by Mrs. Scott.
4. Complete the questions about your book.
5. Sketch your valentine box and gather your supplies. (If you need help getting supplies, please ask and I will see what I have in my craft cabinet!)

February 4 - 10
1. Create your valentine box. Remember, your box should represent your book!
2. Practice telling about your book. You will be able to use your book questions when you present to the class.

Book reports and boxes are due on Friday, February 11!!!

We will give our reports on February 11 and 14.

Because of the two snow days, there will be no Spelling or Reading test on "Wings" this week. We will just read the story in class and do some phonics/word work over the story. I hope you all enjoyed your 2 "Snow Days". I must admit I enjoyed sleeping in, lounging in my jammies, playing games with my kids, and scrapbooking while they were napping!

Math Assessments
However, now we are in 'crunch time'. We still have lots to do before Math State Assessments(March 30 - April 1). In the coming weeks, I will be explaining what the Math State Assessments mean to your child. We will also be taking several formative assessments. These assessments are on the computer and will assess the skills that should already be mastered for the assessment (money, time, addition, subtraction, comparing and ordering, data, patterns, and shapes, and probability). I will have a detailed list of these assessments and your child's math scores when you come to Parent Teacher Conferences, February 23 & 24.

Flashcards
Due to the 2 missed days this week, and our 4 day week next week, this is what we will do concerning flashcards.
Your child must complete flashcards for 1 of the weeks between now and January 21. This means, if your child practiced this week, he can turn in his slip and next week will be a "free" week. If your child did not practice this week, he needs to do so at least twice between now and next Friday - January 21. I will expect to have one signed slip from every child for the combined weeks of January 10 - 21. Anyone who has not turned in a slip, will owe recess on Friday, January 21. If your child chooses to practice both weeks, he will be awarded a homework pass good for one "oops I forgot" and redeemable for a week of future flashcards or a missing assignment.

Multiplication
Beginning in February, EVERY child will begin Multiplication in Rocket Math. Learning our multiplication facts is a MUST. So, be watching for multiplication flashcards in February!!

Valentine Boxes/Book Reports
Next Friday I will be sending home information about our upcoming book report/Valentine's box. I will also email these documents to you and post a timeline here on the blog. Much the way our pumpkin project was a book report, so too will our Valentine box be a book report. The boxes will need to be completed at home. Please encourage your child to have an appropriate book read and tested on by Friday, February 4. Boxes and book reports will be due on Friday, February 11.

When we return from Thanksgiving Vacation, we will be focused on the very practical skills of Counting Money and Telling Time. These two skills are ones that you can help with in a very real way. When you go to the store or out to dinner, ask your child to tell you how much the bill will total or how much change you will have after you buy an item. Have them compare prices and tell you which item is least/more expensive and by how much!

Telling time is an essential skill. Students will need to tell not only the time using a digital and analog clock, but also be asked to tell how many minutes after/past the hour it is and how many minutes before/until the next hour! If your child does not own an ANALOG watch, this might be an excellent Christmas present!!!

Field Trip Tuesday:
We will be going to the Wichita Historical Museum and the Wichita Public Library on Tuesday morning.

Cornucopia Snack:
Thank you to everyone who has brought ingredients for our cornucopia snack. Please send your donations at your earliest convenience so that I may plan for next week!

We will be watching Toy Story 3 next week to celebrate our very successful food drive.

Christmas Craft Day:
Mrs. Scott's annual Christmas Craft Day will be Friday, December 3 beginning at 11:15 and breaking for lunch, recess, and afternoon specials. If you can join us for any or all of this event, we would love to have you!! It works best to have at least 4 parent volunteers. Please let me know if you can come for any or all of this fun day!

Whew! It's been a busy week! It seems like during a short week, we work twice as hard to make up for the day we missed!

Flashcards: This week (11/8 - 11/12) flashcards are optional due to the short week and having a substitute on Tuesday when I was ill. I hope this did not cause you any undue stress!

Upcoming Math Test Our math test on subtraction with regrouping is scheduled for Thursday, November 18. That is one week from today. Please check out the websites below for extra practice!!

Online Math League If your child is participating in Online Math League, the first contest will be next week! Your child will participate in the contest during his or her regular math time.

Yearbooks: Yearbook money is due on November 15.

Picture Retakes are Tuesday, November 16.

AR Goal Adjustment! Your child was given an AR update this morning. You will notice that their 2nd nine weeks goal has been adjusted slightly. The reason for this is that our 2nd nine weeks reading celebration is based on the book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. In order to have this celebration before the winter break, students need to have made their goal by Friday, December 10th INSTEAD of Friday, December 17. To make this fair for students, I have decreased their goal by a proportional amount. So, since goals are based on a 9 week reading period, and we are shortening to 8 weeks, I decreased the goals by 1/9. For example, if your child's goal was 9 points, that was a point each week, so since we have one less week, your child has one less point to earn. If you have questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask. I believe this is a fair solution to this problem. Many children need to be reading more at home and/or making better use of their in class reading time in order to achieve their goal. I am strongly encouraging the children to read during the upcoming Thanksgiving break!

Help Mrs. Scott with her Homework! Yes, you read that correctly. I am working toward my ELL certification, and my first class is called Cultural Diversity. For this class, I have chosen to make a scrapbook celebrating the cultures represented among my students!! If you and your family would like to participate, I am looking for a picture or pictures that show your family participating in a holiday that is important to your culture. OR a picture of a food that your family makes, a picture of your family making that food, and/or the recipe. I will send more information out in the coming days as I know for many of us have holidays coming up that we enjoy celebrating with our families and food! You can email me your pictures or print them and send them in. If it is a picture you would like returned, please let me know and I will scan the photo and return the original. These can be current pictures or pictures from previous years. Thank you in advance for your help!

Field Trip On Tuesday, November 23, our class will be going to the Wichita Historical Museum for their "Magic City" tour and to the Wichita Public Library for a tour and scavenger hunt. Permission slips should be going home next week. We can take 2 parents with us on this trip. So if you are interested, let me know. We will leave at 9:15 and return around 12:30. We will be eating 4th lunch on this day.

Upcoming Short Week

Next week, October 25 and 26, is a 2 day school week for the students so that teachers may meet with parents for Parent Teacher Conferences. I look forward to talking to you at conferences. If you have not already done so, please call the office to schedule your conference, 794-4260.

Due to the short week, we will have some schedule changes.
1. Students will not be going to Mrs. Duerksen's class for reading so that they may present their pumpkin book reports to me! So, there is NO reading story and NO spelling test next week.
2. Flashcards for the week of October 25 will be optional. Students who do their flashcards will get a coupon for a "free" week of flashcards which can help them avoid staying in for missing flashcard practice in the future.
3. Conference week would be a great time to encourage your child to READ at home toward his or her 2nd nine weeks reading goal. Students will know their new goal this week. Their reading range will remain the same (we will retest before winter break). All students start fresh during 2nd quarter and may be reading and testing to make their new goal. Students will also be invited to their new book club for the 2nd quarter. Kids who participate in a book club get to eat in the library with Mrs. Rakes and Mrs. Scott to discuss their books!

Pumpkin Character Book Reports

Friday is pumpkin decorating day! Please send a pumpkin with your child to school this week. We will be decorating on Friday afternoon from 2:15 - 3:45. Thank you to all the parents who have sent craft items and have volunteered to help. We look forward to this exciting time!!

Upcoming Short Week
Next week, the students do not have school on Monday. We will still have flashcard practice slips for next week that will be due on Friday, October 1.

Comparing and Ordering Test
Students will have a math test on comparing and ordering numbers on Friday, October 1. Please see the earlier post with links to extra practice on these skills!

Continents & Oceans Test
We will be having a test over the continents and oceans on Friday, October 1. Students will be bringing home a study guide on Tuesday, September 28 to help them prepare for this test. October book orders will be coming home on Friday. These will be due on Friday, October 8 if you choose to order.

Volunteers Welcome
If you would like to volunteer to help in our classroom, please let me know. I have a basket of goodies for some lucky someone or someones to help with. Also, please mark your calendar for Friday, October 22 in the afternoon to help with our pumpkin project.

Pumpkin Project
We will be doing a pumpkin project book report during the month of October. Students will choose a book to read and decorate a pumpkin to represent a character from the book they have read. Detailed instructions will be given out during the first part of October. I want to give you this heads up because students will need a pumpkin to decorate. Last year, several parents provided craft pumpkins for their children. These worked great because they didn't rot and were easier to carry! The craft stores in Wichita (Michael's and Hobby Lobby) often advertise these for 50% off in the weeks leading up to Halloween. I have also seen them at WalMart. I will try to send an email out if I see these on sale. Real pumpkins are fine, too, but please do not send them to school until the day before decorating day. Again, many more details will come home next month, but if you spy a good deal on a craft pumpkin, you may want to pick one up for your child. If for any reason you are unable to provide a pumpkin for your child, please let me know, and one will be provided. We'd love to have volunteers on decorating day (Friday, October 22) who are good with a glue gun!

Rocket Math & Flashcards Explained

Many of you have had questions about Rocket Math and especially how it pertains to your child's assigned flashcards. So, here is a brief explanation.

When your child began Rocket Math, he or she was given a "how fast can you write" test to determine what his or her individual goal would be. That way there is no penalty for slower writers. The goal for math facts is then based on knowing each fact within 3 seconds.

From there your child was given a quick placement test to see which facts he or she already knew. Not all children started in the same place if they were able to recall the given facts within the 3 second per problem limit.

Each set of problems in rocket math is assigned a letter. Unlike traditional timed tests or "mad minutes" which have all the addition facts from +0 to +9, the daily rocket math pages start with the +1 facts (letter A) and add 4 new problems with each new letter (Letters B, C, and so on). When the students get to letter W, X, Y, & Z it is a review of all the addition facts.

Your child's flashcards correspond with the letter page he or she is currently working on in rocket math. A - E, F - J, K-O, P-W. So as your child progresses, he should be bringing home additional cards to add to his deck. These benchmarks are written on your child's rocket and new cards can be obtained when they are ready for them.

We have already had 2 students complete addition and are working on subtraction. As students pass addition, they will begin subtraction, followed by multiplication, and then division.

Thank you for supporting your child by making practicing their facts an important part of your homework routine. It is a foundation for so many of the things we do in math that the more accurate and automatic the students' facts are the better they will do in other areas of mathematics, too!

Upcoming Short Week

Next week is a short week. The kids do not have school on Monday (Labor Day) or Tuesday (Teacher Inservice). Due to this short week the kids will NOT have a reading story or spelling words next week. Also, practicing math facts will be optional. I will still send home flashcard practice slips, but they will be extra credit - good for an "oops" coupon to turn in on a week when it is an assignment, but the slip was forgotten or the child forgot to practice that week.

Reading Incentives

Tonight your child should bring home his or her STAR report telling you his or her independent reading zone (ZPD). Although it asks for a signature at the bottom, your child does NOT need to return this to school. This paper is for your information.

Students have a minimum goal of 6, 8, 0r 10 points for the 9 weeks. Your child should be able to tell you what his or her goal is for the 1st 9 weeks. It is written at the top of the parent report in purple ink.

Students should work toward earning their AR goal by reading and testing on books IN THEIR RANGE. Books that are below their range (too easy) will not count. Books that are above their range will probably be too difficult and effect their comprehension scores. Students should have at least an 80% average accuracy on their AR tests. This first 9 weeks we are asking that students select and test on books for which we have AR tests (a complete list is available on the CDS website, library books and books from Mrs. Scott's shelf will have a label to indicate if it is a book for which we have an AR test). After the first 9 weeks, a book report may be submitted on a book for which we do not have a test and points will be awarded accordingly.

Each 9 weeks, the third grade has a reading celebration with the theme of our read aloud book. Our first celebration will be "Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing" by Judy Blume. Students who meet their reading goal will attend a movie and eat a snack as part of the celebration. Students who do not meet their goal will attend the thematic activities in the afternoon.

In addition, we have in place a "Reading Reward Pyramid". Students have a copy of these in their reading folders. Rewards are based on a percent of the goal.

100% = Reading t-shirt(1st 9 weeks) & Reading Celebration (snack & movie)
125% = Lunch in the Classroom
150% = Extra Recess
200% = Special Dessert with the Teacher plus Mrs. Scott will buy lunch from a local restaurant

The student in each class with the most points will receive special recognition as well as the 3rd grader with the most points.

Students will have in class reading time several times a week in Mrs. Duerksen's room. Please encourage your child to check out books from our CDS library and be reading toward this goal. We want our whole class to earn their reading shirts!

Our First Week of School

I have enjoyed meeting your children this week. Our focus this week has been on learning classroom procedures, getting to know our classmates, and feeling comfortable finding our way around CDS

Snack & Water Bottles
Thank you so much for all the yummy ingredients you sent for our class Friendship Mix. It made so much that we will enjoy it again on Monday! A reminder that your child is welcome to bring a water bottle to school to keep on their desk throughout the day.

Reading & Spelling
Next week will be a much more academic week. Mrs. Duerksen sent home a note earlier this week outlining her reading and spelling assignments for the week. Please remember that your child will be bringing home their reading book on Monday nights and will need to have read the reading story for the week by Wednesday. Your child’s bookmark should be signed and returned to school after reading each week. Spelling pretests will be on Monday and final tests on Friday. Students will need to study their words during the week. We will be taking the STAR test next week (hopefully on Thursday) to determine your child’s reading range. For most students their reading goal will be 10 points this 9 weeks. When they have read 10 points worth of books, they will be awarded their “Hooked on Reading” t-shirt. Watch for more details to come home soon!

Math
Each week your child will have a flashcard assignment from me. On Mondays, I will send home a slip for you to record the evenings you have helped your child practice his or her facts. We spent class time yesterday creating these cards based on where your child placed in Rocket Math. As he or she progress, it will be their responsibility to get their additional cards from me. They are keeping track of this here at school on their rocket. The slips are due on Friday. I am asking that they practice at least 2 nights each week for at least 10 minutes each time. The more they practice, the quicker they will progress in Rocket Math. If you choose, your child can also count math facts practiced on a website. See my blog www.scottsuperstars.blogspot.com for addition and subtraction sites. This can take the place of practicing the flashcards. Slips may be turned in when 2 nights of practice have been completed. Students who do not turn their completed slips in by Friday, will spend part of their Friday reward recess practicing their facts.

Next week we will be diving into place value and your child may have some homework to complete if they do not finish it during class.

Highlights & Book Orders
Your child should have brought home an order form for Highlights and Book Orders today. Highlights will give us classroom prizes (pencils, bookmarks, stickers, etc.) just for the number of returned and signed slips we receive. So, please do not feel as though you have to order, but if you can, please return the yellow slips so that we can earn prizes for our class. J Book orders will be due on Friday, September 3. If you are interested, follow the instructions on the cover sheet that came home with the book orders today.

Welcome to Mrs. Scott's 3rd Grade

Today Mr. Scott, Karaline, Cody, and I spent 6 hours up in our classroom preparing for your arrival! Things are shaping up nicely. I brought home a tub full of things to work on and with just a few more hours in the classroom, things should be ready for the first day of school!

A Change of Plans

It is with mixed emotions that I report that tomorrow, Friday, May 7, will be my last day for the 2009-2010 school year. Due to contractions and swelling, my doctor has advised that tomorrow be my last day.

I want to thank you all for a wonderful school year. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know your children and helping them grow personally and academically. I look forward to seeing where the future will take them! Please keep in touch as next year no one from our class will be returning to CDS.

Thank you also for your patience during my illnesses this year, it has been a strange year for me in that regard, and your kind words and thoughtfulness have meant so much!

Mrs. Barber will be here to finish out the school year. She will have an email address so you may email her beginning next week. I will send out that address when I get it. You can also email Mrs. Frame at pframe@goddardusd.com. I will continue to check my email, although it will be sporadic, and will post pictures of Cody here on my blog when he arrives.

Weekly Update

Math: We will be taking a math test (paper/pencil) tomorrow over multiplying by 6, 7, 8, & 9. I cannot stress how important it is that your child know his facts 0 - 10 for 4th grade. Next week we will do the corresponding division facts. The test for these facts is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, May 11. Next week, since it is a short week, flashcard practice will be extra credit. The following week May 10 - 14 will be the last week for assigned flashcard practice. This does not mean that students should go on a vacation from them until next fall! The more they practice these facts, the more successful they will be in fourth grade!

Reading/Spelling: Next week is our last story from the reading textbook and our last regular spelling list. Mrs. Frame will send home spelling words (high frequency words) for the week of May 10 - 14 .

Language: Next week we will be writing "My Life as an Ant" stories. After reading the story, Two Bad Ants, students will write from the point of view of an ant. We will also be doing some ant research to prepare for this writing assignment. This is a great opportunity to practice voice in our writing!

Social Studies: We are continuing our inventor study. Unfortunately scheduling has been kind of a nightmare, but we are trudging along. For my inventor class, students should finish their posters this week. Over the weekend, your child should be practicing/memorizing his/her inventor speech. Please bring all props and costumes by Tuesday, May 4. We will be doing a dress rehearsal and putting the finishing touches on our presentation. The kids have been working very hard! Thank you for all your extra effort at home. We will have our "Inventor Hall of Fame" presentation on Friday, May 7 at 3 p.m. in our classroom. Please RSVP via email so we know how many to chairs to set up!

Updates and Reminders

Friday, April 23 is our class field trip to the skating rink! We will be celebrating a job well done on state assessments. We are encouraging the kids to wear their reading shirts. Kids may also bring skates if they prefer their own, money for snacks and games, and they MUST HAVE SOCKS!!!

Tomorrow is also progress report day. Grades will be updated and ready to view by 5 p.m. tomorrow night.

Math: We are working on our x 6, 7, 8, & 9s. Keep practicing those flashcards or math websites.
Reading: No reading test tomorrow, but we will have a spelling test!
Language: Monday we will begin our 6 Trait Writing Post Test
Social Studies: Our inventor unit has begun. Kids in Mrs. Scott's inventor class should have their written report completed by Monday. Posters are due Wednesday, April 28. They may begin bringing their props and costumes next week. On Monday we will make notecards for practicing our speeches and students can begin memorizing their parts.

Reading Goals: All students received an update today on how many reading points they have earned this 9 weeks. The cut off is Thursday, May 20. Kids should be at the halfway point of their reading goal to be on track. Our final reading celebration will be Monday, May 24.

Math: We will be working on division facts for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 10 followed by the multiplication facts for 6, 7, 8, & 9.

Language: Our focus will be on adjectives and writing with descriptive words.

Social Studies: Our inventor classes begin Monday. If your child has not yet turned in his/her permission slip, please have him/her do so by tomorrow!!

No School Friday, April 2. Students have a math packet to complete over the 3 day weekend in order to prepare for next week's state math assessment. Students who complete the packet on time will earn an extra recess!!

Monday, April 5 - Wednesday, April 7: State Math Assessments. No flashcards this week. Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to brings snacks, fruit, and juice for breakfast during these 3 days!

Friday, April 9: Willy Wonka Reading Celebration. Movie in the morning for students who reached their 3rd quarter goal. Luncheon for students who doubled their goal. Activities in the afternoon for everyone. Permission slips for the movie are coming home today - Wednesday, March 31!

Students will be bringing home a Spring Break Review Packet on Friday. It will be due on Monday, March 22. There will be a reward for those returning the assignment on time.

Our last regular formative over fact families will be on Friday, March 26.

March 29 - 31 we will be taking the comprehensive formative and reviewing for the state math assessment.

April 1 we will be having a "Math Hunt" to review for the assessment. If you are able, please send any empty egg cartons to school. We will also be accepting donations of small candy, erasers, etc. to fit inside plastic eggs.

Reading Back to Normal Next Week & AR Deadline Fast Approaching

Next week, we will be back to a regular story (Goodbye Shin Dang Dong), Monday night read slip, and spelling test (Unit 5 Week 3).

The last day to AR test for 3rd quarter and be eligible for all the fun of our Willy Wonka Celebration is Friday, March 12.

Thank you to all who have signed up to donate prizes and already brought prizes for our chocolate themed event!

Our party day will be in April after state testing is completed. Look for more information coming soon!

Math Notes

Math Assessments will be April 5 - 7. Look for a Spring Break packet to be sent home on Friday of next week. This will help us to lose any of our skills over the much needed vacation! :)

We continue to add kids to the Rocket Math Bulletin Board of Fame in the hallway. Thank you for practicing these facts with the kids. This is such an essential skill that if mastered will help them greatly in the years to come.

Today we took a Comparing & Ordering Formative and will review any missed questions tomorrow.

Upcoming Tests:
Next Wednesday, March 10 we will take our measurement formative.
Spring Break - packet due on Monday, March 22
